The year 2023 is a big year for OHIO. We celebrated our largest freshman class on our Athens campus for the second year in a row, and growth on every campus and OHIO Online. We welcomed our first woman president – Lori Stewart Gonzalez – our 23rd President in the year 2023. We opened the new Russ Research and Opportunity Center, will break ground on a new Translational Research Facility, and began plans for a newly reimagined Arts and Education Green.

#1 Best Value OHIO was named the Best Value Public University in the state of Ohio by US News & World Report — for the fourth year running. Marching 110 The Marching 110 is a reason every year, but particularly in 2023 as we celebrate 100 years of bands at OHIO. 100 Years The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism just celebrated 100 years! And its alumni have won almost that many Pulitzers. First Woman President The University named Dr. Lori Stewart Gonzalez as President on March 22. She'll be the University's first woman president. Esports Arena OHIO enjoyed the first year of competition in its Esports arena, and opened a second Esports Center at the Eastern campus in St. Clairsville.

Largest Class OHIO welcomed its largest freshman class in history for the second year in a row this year. #1 Online Nursing Program AllNurses ranked OHIO's online RN to BSN program the best online nursing program in the country. $2 million was awarded to OHIO’s Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment from the Department of Energy to develop products from coal waste Best Alumni Ever The Ohio University Alumni Association named Perry A. Sook, ’80, Alumnus of the Year. Dr. Francine Childs While we mourn her passing on May 3, we forever cheer her legacy as OHIO's first tenured Black professor. 7 Fulbright Students Seven OHIO students were selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, the most competitive academic exchange program in the world.

Japan's Chubu University recently announced a gift of 50 more cherry trees to mark 50 years of our partnership with them.

Cutting Edge Research Dr. Saw Wai Hla, an OHIO physics professor, led a team that broke new ground by producing the first x-ray of a single atom. New Major: Broadcast Meteorology OHIO graduated its first students with degrees in Broadcast Meteorology. Coach of the Year The American Collegiate Hockey Association named Bobcat hockey coach Lionel Mauron the 2023 Coach of the Year. New Clinical Research Facility Planning began for a state-of-the-art translational research facility on OHIO’s Union Green near the Heritage College of Medicine. #BEATMIAMI OHIO men's and women's basketball both #BEATMIAMI.
