Appalachian Scholars General Scholarship Endowment

Your support helps Appalachian students realize their dreams of a college education at Ohio University.

Appalachian high school students are forced to decide to accumulate massive debt to attend college or halt their dream of obtaining a college degree. Only 12 percent of Appalachian residents in Ohio have a college degree. Approximately 65 percent of Appalachian high school seniors surveyed stated that finances are a tremendous barrier to attending college.

Your gift to the Appalachian Scholars General Scholarship Endowment can change the trajectory of Appalachian students' lives, through an excellent education at OHIO.

The Appalachian Scholars Program is a prestigious merit and need-based scholarship program for high school graduates residing in one of the 32 Appalachian counties of Ohio. The program provides scholarship support to students with demonstrated financial need and academic achievement, coupled with the desire and motivation to succeed.

The Appalachian Scholars General Scholarship Endowment, established in 2006 for OHIO University’s Appalachian Scholars, provides academically qualified Appalachian Scholars with four-year renewable scholarships, a summer pre-matriculation program, and myriad resources and support systems to help them realize their potential at Ohio University. The four-year renewable scholarship aids Appalachian Scholars through each college transition year.

Gifts can be made to the Appalachian Scholars General Scholarship Endowment or graduates or friends of OHIO can establish their own named endowment to support Appalachian student(s) through their four years of matriculation at OHIO. With a $12,500 annual stipend, you can support as many students you like (for a minimum of $50,000 per Appalachian Scholars student for a four-year period).

Students must be admitted to Ohio University and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students who meet the eligibility requirements and who complete the FAFSA by the specified priority date will be contacted and invited to submit the Appalachian Scholars application by the Office for Multicultural Student Success and Retention. Select candidates will be required to interview on campus.

OHIO appreciates your gift to the Appalachian Scholars General Scholarship Endowment. We thank you for your previous, current, and future support of the Appalachian Scholars General Scholarship Endowment.

All gifts to this current-use fund are eligible for a dollar-for-dollar match through June 30, 2021, as part of Ohio University’s Current-Use Match Program. The program doubles the impact of gifts made to eligible current-use scholarships by amplifying every dollar of donor funds with $1 in funds from the University’s unrestricted financial aid budget. This will provide immediate financial help to undergraduate students in the OHIO community. This means your $25 becomes $50, and your $500 becomes $1,000. These life-changing gifts support young Ohio University scholars on their path towards a college degree.
