The Diabetes Institute Support Fund
Diabetes is a critical area of research because of the potential of systemic impact on our health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations, and adult blindness. In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled.
Your gift supports diabetes research at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, and may be used to maximize resources, for bench-to-bedside collaborations, and basic and applied research.
In the Athens community, diabetes care is offered through the OhioHealth physician group at Diabetes Clinic, and through the Diabetes Free Clinic offered monthly to qualifying low income, uninsured or underinsured adults. The Diabetes Institute also provides patient education classes in the community, and academic and professional training for healthcare providers.
The Diabetes Institute is a collaborative group of research scientists, clinicians, educators, health administrators and students with a common interest in diabetes whose mission is to improve the quality of life for those affected by diabetes and related diseases through innovative basic and translational research, progressive clinical care, education and community outreach.
