The Sugar Bush Foundation is not accepting new letters of inquiry for FY22-23.

Sugar Bush currently prioritizes projects in the following categories: renewable energy, zero waste, environmental protection and restoration, food security, and sustainable development.

Project Requirements 

The Sugar Bush Foundation funds collaborations between Ohio University and community partners.

For a project to be eligible for Sugar Bush Foundation funding, all of the following must be true: 

  • An Ohio University, Athens or branch campus, college, center, planning unit, or program must be an active partner in the planning and implementation of the project.
  • The community partner must be a registered 501(c)(3) organization or government entity.
  • The project impacts at least one of Ohio’s 32 Appalachian counties.
  • The Sugar Bush Foundation provides funds for start-up, research and/or program development, general support and other support as determined, and does not provide funds for capital projects.

Process and Deadlines

Nov. 30

Letter of Intent is due for prospective projects. Letters of Intent submitted after Nov. 30 at midnight will not be accepted for review in the current award cycle.

To submit a letter of intent for a project that meets requirements, download and complete the Letter of Intent Form [Word] and email it to sugarbushfoundation@ohio.edu by November 30. 

Dec. 17

Prospective project members are notified whether they have been chosen to submit a full proposal. If selected, a Sugar Bush Foundation representative will email the proposal form and further instructions.

Feb. 28

The completed proposal is due, including a minimum of two letters of support and a full project budget.

Spring Sugar Bush Foundation Meeting

Proposals are presented to the Board by the project members.

June 30

Project members will be notified if the project will be funded and the amount of the award.
