Forever Forward, For Every Bobcat

At OHIO, every gift has the power to move the University — and every Bobcat — forward, forever. Whether you choose to support scholarships, experiences, or emergencies, your generosity ensures students have the resources they need to succeed — today and into the future.

Today’s Ohio University students are building their own futures, following in the footsteps of the Bobcats who walked the paths before them. They share the same ambitions, face similar challenges, and rely on the generosity of the Bobcat community to help them reach their goals.

Manasseh Cutler Statue Project

We are seeking support to erect a statue in honor of Manasseh Cutler in 2026. This ambitious and important project is timed to coincide with the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In honoring Cutler and his commitments, we honor what is best in ourselves and our university. In doing so, we also honor the nation and its foundational principles and commitments to liberty, equality and democracy.

The model above used by the artist, Alan Cottril, to create the life-sized statue of Manasseh Cutler. Cottril uses several pieces of period art and multiple portraits to create his model.

Manasseh Cutler (1742-1823) was born in Massachusetts, attended Yale College, and was a contemporary of Benjamin Franklin and others central to the idea of American Democracy. He was a Congregational minister, lawyer, elected official and served as a chaplain in the Continental Army. He was known to have a brilliant and curious mind, focused on serving his community. Cutler was present at the Bunch of Grapes Tavern in Boston in 1786 when a small but distinguished group of American Revolutionary War veterans brought together by Brigadier Generals Rufus Putnam and Benjamin Tupper made plans to encourage Congress to make good on its commitment to provide western land to eligible war veterans.

This historic meeting led to the creation of the Ohio Company of Associates that facilitated the purchase of Ohio Country land; it also led, along with other forces, to the passage of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Cutler played a key role in the difficult task of moving the bill through Congress.

Significantly, as Ohio’s territorial legislature moved, in 1802, to create a public university in Athens, Ohio on “college lands” set aside by the Northwest Ordinance, it was Cutler’s model university charter that became the foundation for both this legislation and the subsequent decision by the Ohio General Assembly, in February 1804, to create Ohio University. Clearly, Cutler was the leading light in the initial organizational design of Ohio University.
